World Heritage Day

April 18th was World Heritage Day. It was an appropriate moment to unveil the restoration of a major Mughal monument in New Delhi, India, the tomb of Isa Khan, within the larger World Heritage site of Humayun’s Tomb. The beautiful octagonal structure is now the centerpiece of a newly restored landscape park. Once dwarfed by the majestic Humayun’s Tomb, which it predates by 20 years, it stands on its own as a new discovery and significant addition to the great monumental heritage of the city.

Haghia Sophia Trabzon

One of the most important monuments of late Byzantium, the 13th-century Church of Hagia Sophia in the Black Sea city of Trabzon, which is now a museum, will be converted into a mosque, after a legal battle that has dramatic implications for other major historical sites in Turkey. Many in Turkey believe that the Church of Hagia Sophia is a stalking horse for the possible re-conversion of its more famous namesake in Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia Museum (Ayasofya Müzesi).

Jammu & Kashmir Ferrets out Heritage

Jammu and KashmirThe Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has been entrusted with the responsibility of preparing a blueprint of the Dastigeer Sahib shrine that was gutted in a devastating fire on June 25th 2012. In recent years INTACH has been doing a lot of visible work in J&K which is being deeply appreciated. It has embarked on a mission to preserve the heritage and cultural ethos of the state. INTACH has been instrumental in exploring villages in the Valley to identify their heritage in the hope that tourists will be drawn to these locations.
